Fall | Graduate | 12 Units | Prereq: 2.003
Review of momentum principles. Hamilton's principle and Lagrange's equations. Three-dimensional kinematics and dynamics of rigid bodies. Study of steady motions and small deviations therefrom, gyroscopic effects, causes of instability. Free and forced vibrations of lumped-parameter and continuous systems. Nonlinear oscillations and the phase plane. Nonholonomic systems. Introduction to wave propagation in continuous systems.
Fall 2020 Update: Fully Remote Classes - The lectures will be run in zoom meetings, using a tablet in lieu of a blackboard. Ample time will be allowed for asking questions and interacting with students remotely. In addition, lecture notes will be posted on the 2.032 website. A comprehensive set of dynamics problems for practice will be available electronically to all registered students. The weekly recitation session will be run by a (very experienced) TA.
