Battelle/MIT Postdoctoral Associate Program - Nov 15, 2012
The Battelle Memorial Institute and MIT Department of Mechanical Engineering are inviting applications to the Battelle/MIT Postdoctoral Associate Program supporting innovative research with relevance to national security. We are particularly interested in proposals that emphasize fundamental research in year one, with the potential for reduction to practice in year two. Successful applicants will have access to Battelle advisors during the second phase who can assist with technology transfer challenges including ultimate transition to
the commercial market.

Postdoctoral Associate, Liquid Metal Battery - Apr 19, 2011
Project description: The Liquid Metal Battery (LMB) project in the Sadoway research group at MIT is seeking key postdoctoral associates to assist in the research and development of a novel liquid battery for stationary grid-scale storage applications. The technology promises to provide a low‐cost and long lifespan storage technology, avoiding the typical failure mechanisms of common batteries fitted with solid electrodes, thus enhancing the security and stability of the electrical power grid. Furthermore, the technology can convert unreliable and intermittent renewable resources, such as wind and solar, into more profitable on‐demand generators. The battery comprises three liquid layers: two metals of different composition separated by a molten salt. One metal serves as the positive electrode, the other metal serves as the negative electrode, and the molten salt is the electrolyte. The three liquid layers stratify based on density differences and contiguous immiscibility. The system operates in the temperature range of 400°C to 700°C. In fall 2010, this project was awarded funding from the ARPA-E division of the US Department of Energy and has grown into a team of 15 motivated researchers.
