Senior Katy Olesnavage Wins 2012 Horn Award
Katy Olesnavage, a senior in the department of Mechanical Engineering, was recently awarded the 2012 Dean A. Horn Award for Undergraduate Study in Marine Research for her thesis titled “The Design and Testing of a Procedure to Locate Fresh Submarine Groundwater Discharge in Cyprus.”
Olesnavage developed a procedure for locating submarine groundwater discharge (SGD) through thermal imaging, and designed conductivity, temperature, and depth sensor equipment to verify its presence. SGD is a source of fresh water that flows underground from coastal aquifers into the ocean and can be used to help areas where fresh water is otherwise difficult or expensive to access.
Please join us in congratulating Katy on her achievement.
