Professor Hover's Minesweeper Featured in the Economist
Associate Professor Franz Hover's hovering autonomous underwater vehicle (HAUV), a robot that sweeps ship hulls for mines based on algorithms Hover developed, was featured on the first page of the recent Economist Technology Quarterly.
The algorithms he and his group designed vastly improve such robots’ navigation and feature-detecting capabilities. The robots are able to swim and hover around a ship’s hull to view complex structures such as propellers and shafts. The goal is to achieve a resolution fine enough to detect a 10-centimeter mine attached to the side of a ship.
