FACULTY POSITIONS

in Mechanical Engineering
Massachusetts Institute of Technology
Cambridge, MA

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Department of Mechanical Engineering (MechE) seeks candidates for faculty positions starting July 1, 2024 or on a mutually agreed date thereafter. We seek candidates who will provide excellence and leadership in research, innovate in undergraduate and graduate education, and contribute to the diversity and growth of the MechE community at MIT. The search is for candidates to be hired at the assistant professor level; however, under special circumstances an untenured associate professor or senior faculty appointment is possible, commensurate with experience.

Candidates in all areas related to Mechanical Engineering will be considered, including, but not limited to: (1) mechanics: modeling, experimentation and computation; (2) design, manufacturing, and product development; (3) control, instrumentation, and robotics; (4) energy science and engineering; (5) ocean science and engineering; (6) bioengineering; and (7) micro/nanoengineering. These topics map to the seven focus areas of the MechE department, which are highlighted on our website, along with our most recent strategic plan (https://meche.mit.edu/sites/default/files/2018-Strategic-Plan.pdf). Research in cross-cutting topics, including artificial intelligence and data science related to core areas of MechE is also of interest. Faculty duties include conducting original scholarly research, developing course materials and teaching courses in Mechanical Engineering and related topics at the undergraduate and graduate levels, and student advising.

Candidates must hold an earned Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering or a related field by the start date of their faculty employment. Applications must include a cover letter, curriculum vitae, statement of research interests (3 pages maximum), and statement of teaching interests (1-2 pages). In addition, candidates should provide a statement regarding their views on diversity, inclusion, and belonging, including past and current contributions as well as their vision and plans in these areas (1-2 pages). Candidates should also include copies of no more than three publications and arrange for four individuals to submit letters of recommendation on their behalf. This information must be entered electronically at the following site: https://school-of-engineering-faculty-search.mit.edu/meche/register.tcl. Review of applications will begin in December 2023 and applications must be received by January 15, 2024.
