MIT Graduate Admissions Policy Update
The department of Mechanical Engineering will not require GRE tests for applications for graduate admission for 2024, nor will we use GRE scores as a basis for evaluating candidates for admission in the 2024 application process.
Overview
We prepare students to become innovative technological leaders in industry, academia, government, and society – leaders whose visions are founded upon fundamental knowledge, uncompromising analysis, creativity, passion, and ethics. Our graduates go on to a vast array of careers in product design, research, management, medicine, government, teaching, public service, and entrepreneurship.
We offer the following graduate degrees:
Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering (SMME)
Master of Science in Ocean Engineering (SMOE)
Master of Science in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering (SMNAME)
Master of Science in Oceanographic Engineering (SMOGE, joint MIT/WHOI degree)
Mechanical Engineer’s (ME) Degree
Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) or Doctor of Science (ScD)
Dual degree with Leaders for Global Operations (LGO) Program in MIT Sloan School of Management

If you wish to be considered for the MechE graduate program independently of the MIT-WHOI Joint Program, please also complete the MechE online application.
