Enrolling Once Admitted

Housing

One of the first and most important steps in relocating to a new city is finding a new place to live. Students who need a hand finding a home in the Cambridge area can contact the MIT Housing Office for assistance.

Health

Upon enrollment at MIT, students are automatically enrolled in the MIT Student Medical Plan. Massachusetts law requires all incoming students to take a physical, be up to date on immunizations, and provide a copy of their medical history. Incoming students can learn more on the Student Requirements page on the MIT Medical web site.

Tuition Support

Any student who receives partial or full funding through MIT is required to fill out an I-9 form and an invention and agreement form with Marie Pommet (1-103). All students must provide legal identification at this time - passport, social security card, or driver's license for domestic students; passport for international students. MIT Student Financial Services has more information on their Graduate and Professional Students page.

International Students

International students need to make an appointment with the MIT International Students Office upon their arrival. The ISO assists non-US students with all the necessary steps to be cleared for registration. More detailed information can be found at the ISO web site.

Orientation

For new graduate students at MIT, the Graduate Student Council organizes a number of orientation events designed to help students feel comfortable, familiar and welcome at MIT. You can learn more about these activities by visiting the GSC Orientation page.

Registration Day

All registration materials are delivered to the MechE Graduate Office. On registration day in the fall term, new students attend a brief orientation meeting with the Chairperson of the Graduate Committee. At that time, each student receives a packet of registration information, and is directed to a faculty member who will assist with registration.

Students are then directed back to the staff of the MechE Graduate Office, who complete the registration process in the Pappalardo Lab. Matriculating students must pick up their registration in the Pappalardo Lab, take it to their advisor for review, and then back to the staff of the MechE Graduate Office in the Pappalardo Lab.

Graduate Life at MIT

The MIT Graduate Students Office is an Institute-wide support and referral office for graduate students and graduate administrators. It provides a broad range of information and services that are geared specifically toward serving the graduate community at MIT.
