Spring | Undergraduate/Graduate | 6 Units | Prereq: 2.670+2.008, 2.670+2.810, or equivalent w/ permission of instructor.
In this class, students will design, build, and test a desktop CNC mill. The emphasis is on gaining advanced proficiency with the tools in the LMP/Manufacturing shop, and gaining practical experience in making engineering drawings, machine assembly, and metrology. Through the semester, each team will: (1) prepare CAD and production-ready drawings for each component of the machine (excluding actuators, motors and other off-the-shelf parts); (2) program and run fabrication processes to make each component; (3) assemble their CNC mill; (4) validate the mill’s performance both via measurement of its motion, and by using it to machine test artifacts.
Spring 2021 Update: Virutal with a required in person component.
