Understanding deformation and flow in an amorphous material through molecular simulations

Professor Sidney Yip, Massachusetts Institute of Technology

A few issues surrounding the study of atomic-level processes of deformation and flow in a driven amorphous system will be discussed:

• Timescale limitation of molecular dynamics
• Mesoscale science frontier – problems of slow dynamics
• Case studies in creep and compression avalanches
• Videos (narrated by Penghui Cao)
• Molecular mechanisms

Talk will conclude with a bit of perspective on implications for theory, modeling, and experiments.
