The subject develops large-deformation, thermodynamically consistent continuum constitutive theories for the inelastic deformation of solids, including metals, polymers, granular materials, and rock-like materials. We will also discuss theories of damage and failure.
An important component of the subject will be the numerical implementation of deformation and fracture models using the finite element method, primarily in Abaqus and, where appropriate, FEniCSx. Applications will include problems in materials design, structural analysis, and manufacturing.
